The Austin College coaches and team members honored more than 40 student-athletes, including the Austin College male and female athletes of the year, in its annual Athletics Convocation on Thursday night in Ida Green Theater on the Austin College campus.

By virtue of head coaches’ selections, senior basketball player Kola Alade of Murphy, Texas and senior basketball player Katy Williams of Sulphur Springs, Texas were named the male and female athletes of the year respectively for the 2009-2010 year. Women’s soccer player Natalie Nelms of Dallas, Texas and football and baseball player Phillip Gonzales of North Richland Hills, Texas were named by the coaches as the Tim Jubela Freshmen Athletes of the Year. Nelms started 17 games for the Kangaroos, tied for the most starts on the team, and scored a goal and adding two assists from her defensive position and was named 3rd Team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Gonzales, a wide receiver on the football team and center fielder on the baseball team, earned All-SCAC honors on the gridiron while making an immediate impact on the baseball team with his outstanding defense and speed on the base paths.

Williams won the Gene Day Award after being named the SCAC Player of the Year, 1st Team All-SCAC and earned All-Region and All-America honors after breaking the conference records for both rebounds in a career and highest rebounding average in a season with 13.3 boards per game.
