The Lady Roos tennis team competed this past weekend at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Antonio Texas.
The tournament was highlighted by the performance of Arianne Goddard (Fr.) from Dallas, TX. who reached the singles “A” draw finals. Goddard who entered the tournament seeded 13th defeated the 5th seeded player from UT-Dallas in the round of 16, the 3rd seeded player from Trinity University in the quarterfinals and the 2nd seeded player from UT-Tyler in the semifinals. Goddard also teamed with Jessie Berger (Jr.) to reach the quarterfinals in the doubles “A” draw, defeating the 6th seeded team from UT-Dallas in the round of 16.
A slew of other Lady Roos posted strong performances in the “A” singles and doubles draws. Senior Minnie Satyavada overcame a tough first round lost to the 6th seed to reach the quarterfinals in consolation and along with her partner Kelly Lewis (Sr.) reached the round of 16 in main draw of doubles, falling to the 2nd seeded team. Freshman Sophie McDonald fought her way to the round of 16 in consolation after falling in a hard-fought first round match to the 8th seed, and later teamed up with Freshman Anne Booker to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles consolation draw.
The Lady Roos also dominated the “B” singles and doubles draws. Junior Margaret Edwards, in her first tournament back from missing last year due to health issues, was able to hold off her teammate Freshman Madison Watt for the “B” draw singles championship. Freshman Ashley Hellman and sophomore Jessie Berger both reached the semifinals of the “B” singles draw before falling in two tough matches to their teammates Edwards and Watt respectively. In “B” doubles both Lady Roos teams, Ashley Hellman/Madison Watt and Margaret Edwards/Amy Harvey (Fr.), reached the semifinals before falling.
Coach Gannon on this weekends results, “Each and every one of these young ladies came out and competed and left everything they had out on the court. I couldn’t be more proud of them and the way they represented Austin College and am extremely excited about the upcoming spring tennis season.”
