Qiu Jin defied tradition to become the leader of a revolutionary army in China, demanding equal rights and opportunities and defying the corrupt Qing Dynasty.
“Autumn Gem: A Documentary on the Life of China’s First Feminist,” will be shown at 4:30 p.m. Monday, October 18, in Austin College Caruth Administration Building Room 201. The filmmakers, Rae Chang and Adam Tow, will be available after the show for a question-and-answer session. The hour-long film screening, sponsored by the Asian Studies department at Austin College, is free and open to the public.
Qiu Jin (1875-1907) became the first female martyr for China’s 1911 revolution and is celebrated as a national heroine today. “Autumn Gem,” produced by Chinese-American filmmakers, is the first documentary feature film on Qiu Jin in the United States. The film uses scholarly interviews, archival materials, and dramatic recreations to bring Qiu Jin’s story to life.
