Pre-Professional Programs

Austin College offers excellent pre-professional preparation for law, medicine, dentistry, the ministry, engineering, and other professional schools as well as graduate schools. Students, in consultation with the faculty mentor, select an appropriate major in keeping with professional school requirements. In addition, special pre-professional advisers have been designated for each area of interest.

Pre-Engineering

Austin College offers students the opportunity to pursue a career in engineering by studying at Austin College for either three (3/2) or four years (4/2) and then studying at an engineering school for an additional two or three years. At the end of this time the student receives a Bachelor of Arts degree from Austin College and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the engineering school.

Health Sciences

Austin College has a long history of excellence in preparing students for entry into a variety of health science programs throughout the United States. Our program focuses on providing students with a solid background in the sciences within the context of a broad liberal arts education.

Pre-Theology

Throughout its history, Austin College has played a vital role in the education of students preparing for a profession in theology. Such students need to obtain a sound, diversified liberal arts education. Students who contemplate the graduate study of theology, professional training for a church vocation or the study of religion generally should register with College chaplain John Williams. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada has suggested a normative pattern of pre-theological education, available from the College. Individual counseling is available by appointment with the college chaplain. During each term, representatives from different theological seminaries visit the campus. Conferences are arranged with pre-theology students so that they may learn more about each seminary.

Pre-Law

Austin College is well-qualified to aid pre-law students in preparing for their future occupation. The College believes that a thorough liberal arts education is the best foundation for students to attain both their personal and professional goals, and law schools have responded favorably to this concept. A pre-law adviser aids students in degree planning and law school selection. Each year many Austin College graduates are admitted to a number of the better law schools in the nation. The Austin College Pre-Law Society seeks to further students' understanding of the law and the legal profession. To fulfill these objectives, speakers—law professors, judges, lawyers, law students and politicians—are brought to the campus throughout the year to present programs for the Pre-Law Society.

The program strives to educate individuals who will be active learners in their personal and professional lives, who will become dedicated and creative teachers, and who will be educational leaders in their schools. Austin College is an initial certifying agency and cannot grant an MAT degree to anyone already holding any type of teaching certificate.

The Austin Teacher Program (ATP) is fully accredited through the Texas State Board for Educator Certification.
