Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Rodney Wecker will enter his fourth season as the head coach of the Austin College men’s basketball team in 2010-11. During his first season at the helm, Wecker guided the ‘Roos to their first postseason berth in a decade when the team reached the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, and has continued this success by leading the ‘Roos to the SCAC Tournament in each of his first three seasons.

Since taking over the program, Wecker has led the ‘Roos on a steady climb and this past season coached the team to a program record 20 wins and a 20-7 overall record, including a SCAC best 12-4 conference mark and the SCAC West regular season crown. Wecker was named the SCAC Coach of the Year for these achievements.

Wecker came to Austin College from Whitworth College, where he served as an assistant coach from 1991-2004, and associate head coach from 2005-2007. During his time at Whitworth, Wecker helped guide the team to a 280-146 record and 12 post-season appearances, including four national tournaments. The team also won five conference titles during Wecker’s time there. In 2003, Wecker was named the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year.

Along with serving as Head Coach at Austin College, Wecker also serves as the coordinator of athletic facilities and be directly responsible for the management of the Robert T. Mason Athletic-Recreation Complex.

Wecker played collegiately at Metropolitan State College in Denver, where he earned a degree while double majoring in secondary education and sports communication. He received his Master’s degree in teaching from Whitworth in 1995. Wecker and his wife Trina have three children: daughter Cameron, son Paxson, and daughter London.

Selected to Play in NABC All-Star Game

Alade, a guard from Murphy, Texas, was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a 1st Team All-SCAC selection after leading the ’Roos to a program record 20 victories in the 2009-10 season. Alade finished in the top 10 in the conference in scoring (15.6 points per game), field goal percentage (49.3%) and free throw percentage (73.5%). Alade was a three-time All-SCAC performer over the course of his career.

NABC First Team All-Region

Alade, a guard from Murphy, Texas, was a 1st Team All-SCAC performer after leading the ’Roos to a program record 20 wins. Alade averaged 15.8 points per game (third in the SCAC), 5.0 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game (ninth in the SCAC), and 1.7 steals per game (fifth in the SCAC) and was also among the conference leaders in field goal and free throw percentage. Alade is a three time All-SCAC performer and this season became just the 18th player in the history of the men’s basketball program to surpass 1,000 career points.

Alade, a senior guard from Murphy, Texas, was a 1st Team All-SCAC selection in addition to being named the Player of the Year after finishing in the top 10 in the league in scoring (15.6 points per game – fourth), steals (1.7 per game – fifth), field goal percentage (49.3% – third) and free throw percentage (73.5% – seventh). Alade is a three-time All-SCAC performer and received eight out of 12 votes for Player of the Year from SCAC coaches. Alade is the first male student-athlete from Austin College to earn Player of the Year in any sport in the conference since AC joined in 2006.

Weekly Honors: November 15-22

Kola Alade, G, SR, Austin College

Alade, a senior guard from Murphy, averaged 18.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 53.7% from the field as the ’Roos topped No. 12-ranked UT-Dallas, LeTourneau, Rust College and Sul Ross State to open the season at 4-0. Alade scored a team-best 15 in the upset win over UTD and scored more than 20 in the wins over Rust and Sul Ross.
