Coach
Ed Garza
Head Volleyball Coach
Ed Garza joined the Austin College staff in August of 1996, when he became the Lady Kangaroos’ fifth all-time head volleyball coach.
Garza is currently the 12th winningest active coach and 40th in all time wins at the NCAA Division III level. He has guided Austin College to five appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, advancing to the “sweet 16” round in 2005.
His Collegiate record now stands 427-141 (.751 – winning percentage). Since 2002 Austin College has been ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation in every weekly poll conducted by the AVCA and six of the last seven years the volleyball team has won 32 or more matches. While a member of the American Southwest Conference, the Kangaroos finished first or second in eight of his ten campaigns and in 2005 Austin College won the conference tournament in their last year in the conference. In 2007 the Kangaroos advanced to the championship match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament in its second season in the conference. The team finished the season ranked No. 14 in the nation and won a program record 38 matches.
Garza has coached one First Team All-American, three Second Team All-Americans, and six Honorable Mention All-Americans as well as two Freshman of the Year honorees in the AVCA South Region. Garza has also coached two AVCA National Players of the Week, three GTE Academic All-American Team members, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team members, and 54 players who have made All-Conference in the last 14 years. Coach Garza was a seven time Coach of the Year in the ASC, and in 2007 was named Coach of the year in the SCAC.
Before Austin College he served as head coach at North Lake College for two years. Garza also served as an assistant coach at Henderson State University in 1989-90, and was an assistant at his alma mater Ouachita Baptist University from 1986-1989.
As a club coach, he has qualified two open teams, three American teams, and six national teams for the USA Junior Olympic Girls Volleyball Championship National Tournaments. In the last two years his team has finished fifth while losing only one match each year. In the 2008 season his team medaled by finishing in third place nationally in the 14 year old age group. Garza is on the North Texas Junior Volleyball Board. He is also the Director of High Intensity Volleyball Camps which caters to youth age 10 -18 years old.
A 1979 graduate of Falfurrias High School, Garza earned a B.S.E. degree in physical education from Ouachita Baptist University in 1986. While at Ouachita Baptist, he lettered in track and cross country for three years. In 1996, Garza coached the Austin College women to the ASC cross country title and was named ASC Coach of the Year, and in 2000, he was selected as the ASC East Division Tennis Coach of the Year.

Jessica Fleming, JR, M, Austin College
Fleming, a middle from Allen, had a huge week as the ‘Roos sprinted to a 5-0 record to start the season, posting a .452 attack percentage along with 4.06 kills-per-set. Last season she led the nation in blocks and picked up right where she left off this year, posting an incredible 2.18 blocks-per-set average in the team’s five victories. Last season Fleming earned both All-SCAC and All-South Region honors for her outstanding play. Fleming is the SCAC’s first recipient of this award this season. |

Jessi Fleming, SO, M, Austin College
Fleming, a native of Allen, averaged 1.70 blocks per set, making her easily the statistical champion for 2009. The next closest student-athlete averaged 1.48 blocks per set. Fleming had 64 block solos and 162 block assists, making her the only player in the nation to surpass 200 total blocks for the year. Fleming also finished fifth nationally with a .402 hitting percentage and was the key reason why the ’Roos, who finished the year with a 28-12 record, were second in the nation with 2.64 blocks per set. |

Second Team – All SCAC, Jessi Fleming
SO, M, Austin College Fleming, a sophomore middle hitter from Allen, was named 2nd Team All-SCAC and was one of five players in the conference to receive a vote for Player of the Year, led the SCAC with a .406 hitting percentage during the regular season and finished third in the conference with an average of 3.39 kills per game. Fleming also led the conference in blocks by a wide margin, averaging 1.66 per game in that category. |
Third Team – All SCAC, Jordan Anderton
JR, S, Austin College Anderton, a junior setter from Garland, was named 3rd Team All-SCAC after finishing the year second in the conference in assists with an average of 10.25 per game. Anderton also posted the second best hitting percentage on the team at .365 and averaged 2.74 digs per game, good for third on the team. In addition, Anderton had 13 service aces on the season. |

SO, M, Austin College Fleming, a sophomore from Allen, had an outstanding weekend for the ’Roos, averaging 4.17 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .421 while also adding 2.17 blocks per wet and 16 solo blocks as Austin College went 3-1 at the Southwestern Halloween Tournament over the weekend. |
