Coach

Michelle Filander
Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Michelle Filander enters her first season as the coach of the Kangaroos in the 2010-11 season. Filander comes to Sherman after having served as an assistant at Washington & Jefferson College.

Filander first served as an assistant at Washington & Jefferson from 2004-2007 before taking over the role of wellness coach at the Charlotte County YMCA of North Port, Florida. Filander returned to W&J for the 2009-2010 season. The Presidents made three trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament with Filander on the sideline including a first round appearance this past year when W&J went 23-5. Overall, Filander helped coach the Presidents to an 86-26 record in her four years.

Prior to her time at Washington & Jefferson, Filander served as an assistant coach at Bethany College and helped guide the team to an overall record of 61-22. Between her stints at Washington & Jefferson and Bethany, Filander helped coach those two teams to three Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships.

Filander, who began her playing career at NCAA Division I Robert Morris University, received her degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2001 and later earned her Master’s degree in Athletic Coaching Education from West Virginia University in 2004. While serving as a student assistant at Ohio Wesleyan in 2001, Filander helped lead the team to the NCAA Division III Final Four.

Along with her playing and coaching experience, Filander has given guest lectures on stress management and psychology of injury while at Bethany and also organized a study in sport psychology. During her time at Washington & Jefferson, she coordinated the team’s strength and conditioning program and was an integral part of the program’s recruiting process.

SCAC Women’s Player of the Year

Williams, a senior forward from Sulphur Springs, Texas, was named the SCAC Player of the Week three times during the season in addition to being named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week earlier this season. Williams set SCAC single season records for rebounds per game (13.3) and career rebounds (1,069 heading into the SCAC tournament) and led the SCAC in field goal percentage (55.4%) and rebounding. Williams was also among the SCAC leaders with a 16.2 points per game average.

Weekly Honors: February 15-19, 2010

Williams, a senior forward from Sulphur Springs, posted back to back games of 18 points and 15 rebounds as the ’Roos topped Trinity and Southwestern to improve to 17-6 overall and 11-3 in SCAC play over the weekend. Williams shot 52.2% from the field and made all 12 of her free throw attempts, in addition to coming up with five steals and handing out five assists over the weekend. Williams leads the SCAC in rebounding and now has 14 double-doubles on the year.

Williams, a senior forward from Sulphur Springs, averaged 17.0 points and 16.0 rebounds while making 13-of-22 attempts from the field (.591%) and added 2.5 assists per game in wins over Oglethorpe and Sewanee. Williams had double-doubles in both games, posting 18 points and 11 boards against Oglethorpe and adding 16 points and 21 rebounds against Sewanee as the ’Roos extended their winning streak to 10 games.

Kayla Redden, G, SR, Austin College

Redden, a senior guard from Ector, had a big weekend as the ’Roos cruised past Trinity and Southwestern by scores of 74-49 and 55-37, respectively. Redden averaged 16.5 points and knocked down 9-of-16 (56.3%) as Austin College swept the Tigers and Pirates for the first time since joining the conference in 2006 to improve to 3-1 in SCAC play. Redden also shot 57.9% from the field over the weekend and added three assists, 1.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game.

Williams, a senior post from Sulphur Springs, had a strong weekend as the ’Roos split with Otterbein and LaGrange at the Southwestern Thanksgiving Tournament, averaging 16.5 points on 15-of-25 shooting and adding 14.5 rebounds per game. Williams had 14 points and 12 boards against Otterbein and followed that effort with 19 points and 17 rebounds against LaGrange.
